I have a question for everyone. I have been through so many decks with firewire to import video. I have had JVC and the Sony DR7 (yes I know, it is in Japanese which makes it difficult to operate). My sony dr7 has eaten some tapes up lately and I just can't take the chance of using it anymore. So out of frustration and because I don't want to wear out the heads in my cameras, I purchased a cheap $300 video camera to bring in the footage. But just wondering what others use to bring in their footage.

The only thing you can't do is bring in HD video using a camera that is only standard. A deck is a deck is a deck. Using a camera as a deck should make no difference. The problem with decks is that they are so expensive and seems to me they wear out faster than a cheap camera! I know that I am through buying decks.

Gordon, the problem with that is you are wearing down your heads on an expensive camera. That is why I purchased a cheap camera to use as a deck. I also purchased a dv rewinder on ebay pretty cheap too.

I use my Canon XL2 as my DV deck. I won't explain how to use it as an analog to digital converter since so many have already done so.

Interesting point, but will a cheap camera import with the same quality? If I shoot 24p on my XL2 and my cheap camera doesn't handle that, it won't do me any good. Basically, the best solution is to pop for the DV deck.

I have a cheap camera that I took to Afghanistan with me, the problem was when I went to log and capture, the computer lost the ability to control the play function. It could rewind it, fast forward, play backwards and creep to an in point frame by frame but when it came to just playing it back, it wouldn't do it. I had to sit there and hit play when it got to an in point.
