I have a 1TB Western Digital external hard drive I use for a capture scratch and asset storage with my MacBook Pro. The last time I fired up the computer I got the prompt "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". I tried the disk utility and the drive showed up as new and all files were gone. I tried this drive in a G5 and got the same response. I called WD tech support and they told me the files were corrupted and suggested using a data recovery software. Can anyone recommend a good product? I have a short film stored on this drive that premieres in 6 days, needless to say I'm sweating bullets. Thanks in advance.

You don't have a raid system? (one that mirror images the other). If not, first I want to warn everyone in this business, GET A RAID! That way when one goes bad the other back up one still has everything. I learned the hard way!
Western Digital should be able to recover that for you. I know Seagate does.
If you use someone else other than Western Digital it will void your warranty.
OK, the problem you have is your time restraints right now. My suggestion is to go to youtube.com and in the search put in "data recovery western digital" and it will explain how to do it. Warning: do not attempt to fix it without wearing gloves! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul97jWv2PKY
Hope this helps (also this site may be of help: http://www.essdatarecovery.com/westerndigital.asp )

I also use Carbonite as an online backup. It's a great price, especially considering they give you unlimited space, and as long as it's had time to upload the file to their server recovering it is very quick and easy.

Thanks Joan. This is definitely a lesson learned the hard way. I checked out the youtube video you suggested and will give it a shot. I also contacted ESS and that was cost prohibitive ($3800 for an emergency turnaround) and they couldn't guarantee it would get back in time. Our sound designer on the project has the project files so I will work closely with them for the next couple of day, but the ability to be able to recover the files manually (i.e. the youtube video tutorial) is a tool to have in you toolkit.
Todd, I hope you got all your data. Tell us how things worked out for you. By the way everyone... be sure to look up the new DROBO it is awsome for storage for videographers!

Joan,
Through a team effort we were able to recover all the files and have a successful premiere for our short film. You can check out the final project here http://vimeo.com/3766112 . A colleague suggested checking out the DROBO during our crisis and it is definitely a valid storage option. Thanks again for your suggestions.
