I'm looking for a HD cam for an upcoming project, my budget is only $1000 and it has to be good in low lighting. I've looked at JVC GR-HD1, Canon XL1, XL2, GL1 and GL2. Are these any good or do you have any other ideas.

Thanks

Hello Jay.

The Canons you mention are ALL standard definition (SD) cams, not HD. And probably the ONLY one of them you'll find for $1K is the GL1, and trust me you wouldn't want it. These are, however, GREAT units ... I continue to use my XL1 and GL2 units for production work because the cry for HD production simply isn't being heard from my client base ... YET!

There's a whole slew of decent consumer units out there for $1k, but the really decent stuff is likely to go over that a couple hundred. The Canon line, if you can still find one, has the HV series, ending with the HV40, that might fall in the $600 or so category and might be well-worth considering, depending on your project expectations.

I'm sure some others will pipe in here soon.

I'm tapeing something that may be on tv.

OK, got one, it's not HD but it's good enough, Thanks.
