Okay, I have been producing videos for a dance studio for the past five years. I have NEVER had them complain until this year. They say they have had 12 out of 250 DVDs with issues. According to them their customers have called them complaining that the DVDs are skipping. I have no problem replacing the DVDs but my client just wants me to mail their customers new DVDs without getting the old DVDs back. It is very hard to isolate the problem without the DVDs in front of me!!! The only thing I changed this year was that the DVDs were authored on DVD Encore for Mac. In the past years I had NO complaints.I even used the same brand of DVD-Rs (Verbatim). Is it possible that I just bought a bad batch of DVDs? I bought them at Micro Center this time instead of my normal supplier. I have never heard of the DVDs skipping before unless the player was going out or the DVDs were scratched or dirty. I have had a handful of times in the past 9 years where people couldn't play one but nothing about skipping.

Any ideas would be helpful! :) I just don't want to send these people new DVDs if the same problem is going to occur. Could it just be a bad batch of DVDs?

Rags: I'm not familiar with Avid (I use Sony Vegas), but I've found it's best to go directly from the editing software to the DVD format. Vegas has presets for DVD video as well as DVD widescreen video, both PAL and NTSC, so the best thing to do is to see if Avid has this as well. This should take care of any problems you have as well as avoiding the reduction in picture quality that comes from compressing the video two additional times.

I do, but I am trying to attract customers... I have been raising my prices every 6 months or so. I want to top off around 25.

You don't think the service should cost more?

The conversion time varies depending on how long the tape is. The tape must be run in real time, so I have to start with that. It takes a few minutes to edit and trim, then convert to a .mpg. I then do the chapters in the authoring program. Takes about 3 or 4 hours at most to convert and author.

Include the conversion time though. How long from beginning to end?
Comment by David Cohen on November 11, 2008 at 2:39pm
It only takes me a few minutes. I mostly do wedding videos, or ones that are dated. It is easy to find where the brides and grooms reception are, or where the dinner and dancing are. I also have a program that pulls the audio from the video, and I trim everything except for the portion where the bride and groom are introduced, and use that as my menu audio. Once the conversion is complete, it only takes me about 15 minutes to author the DVD and start to burn to disk.
