Lower Thirds can be terrible, or they can be great.

From an animator's view point, L3s on talking heads are usually boring, but an editor or director may want it "flat" so that the viewer isn't distracted from what's going on in the edit event.

I wonder what DV Pros' opinions on Lower Thirds are.

I enjoy seeing them from a design viewpoint.  It's a turn-off and very distracting to me when I see a really great shot slapped with a not so good L3.  Perhaps it's big, blocky text, a poor background element, bad placement...whatever--it just ruins the professional essence of the entire frame.  On the other hand, if there is an easy-to-read L3 boasting an intriguing/classy design or cutting-edge but not cheesy mograph/layout characteristics, it may strengthen the overall production value of the program.  In my mind I will sit there and think, hmm, a team that cares about the quality of their content & the branding of their program/image.  That's what I think about when I take it all in (kind of nerdy but then I have a critical eye and watch with a very different purpose/angle than your average home viewer).

I think lower thirds it's like music, too much it's too much.

Some time it's need to be more discrete.People read what you put on the screen any way.

It's very strong at TV because it's hypnotize the viewer.
