The Necropolis of San Vito Clip: a shocking case of an endangered heritage site.

The flood again, among the general "who it cares of"...
Pozzuoli _Italy, Via Vecchia Campana, San Vito.
Sunday, September 20, 2009.

"Shame! What a shame! ". First subdued tone of the invective is mixed with noise of the blades, so that scanned remove the mud. It's Sunday morning in Pozzuoli, near San Vito, just where is the ancient Roman necropolis. Has fallen the night before a storm, which completely flooded with water and land that stretch of road. So, the small community of believers - about 30 people - can not even enter the church dedicated to San Vito '600 Martyr. On the wall there is a terrible and obvious sign of the level reached by water: at least thirty centimeters. Is not the first time that happens, just a bit 'of water from the sky, very little, and suddenly there all s'allaga. The faults? Be distributed in accordance with variable weights: on the one hand, some of its inhabitants, who have built illegally, without any distinction, cement beyond measure the surrounding countryside, and varying water balance forever, and second, the local authority (the Municipality), which never shall ensure regular maintenance of drains.
In front of the small church, the sad spectacle and livid assist the archaeological remains of one of the largest and most important Roman necropolis, the prodigious strings in "opus reticulatum" has always been fenced off and made inaccessible, now seem exhausted by the perpetual renovation, first started and then suspended, resumed, a never completed. These contracts - as well as many others in our South - are suspended as a little cows' special to be milked indefinitely due to the mechanism of the 'update price'. Yet seventeen fragments of marble decoration of the mausoleum contained in the collections of the British Museum in London. Meanwhile, get a Fiat Panda with two policemen, one of them took pictures, interviewed, laconic answer: "we are seeing." Soon a truck passes through the sewer service, with three men on board, arrived at the crossroads that seems a lake, make a U-turn, and leaves. Ubaldo then, abandoned the softly just before, the screaming vainly against "Third World! Third world", he is one of a handful of believers who are working with shovels, rags and brooms, so that it can be celebrated mass. Moreover, for an inexplicable game of chance, the first reading today (from the Book of Wisdom) speaks of the violence of the wicked, which silences the voice of the righteous... Finally, you can drill a hole for entry, the priest gets out of his car, and you ring the bell. Exit, across the street made river, and beyond the high fence, the cemetery is surprisingly dry, despite its two millennia, it remains a magnificent example of highly engineered wastewater. For contemporaries, the bitterness remains of a people unable to earn all the grace and beauty that have happened in luck. It is also the suspicion that the English of the British Museum, in the 800 would have done better bring everything else in London.
